Christine and Philippe are arrested for the murder of Marcel and treated as murderers. After a few hours, Marcel Lindet’s suicide being proven, Superintendent Jarrel releases Christine while insidiously asking Pierre to better watch his wife. Darnet takes advantage of Christine’s delay to threaten her with dismissal and tells her that it is now the young, beautiful and fresh Isabelle who will perform some of his announcements. Christine suspects Pierre is having an affair with pretty Nancy, from the American delegation. She leaves home and sleeps at the hotel for the first time in twenty-five years of marriage. Jarrel, following orders from the Interior Ministry to cover up the case, charges a young autistic young man of Algerian origin with the murder of Marylou Fantin. Inspector Rubereau, Jarrel’s second, warns Philippe of the miscarriage of justice and urges him to carry out the investigation as a journalist. Philippe offers Christine to meet the mother of the young boy, a returnee from Algeria, alone and helpless in the face of the police. Philippe and Christine are certain that Mohammed Attoun did not kill Marylou, but that he makes an ideal culprit in these tormented days of July 1962. They go to the manor where the fatal evening took place and, while they are in hiding, Darnet arrives who obviously comes to pay the guard.
